Knockdown/rebuild of the family holiday – come retirement – home

Baxter+Co were invited by MHDP Architects to collaborate on the interior design of this new high-end home, which took design cues from the client’s interest in Halverson boats and mid-century aeroplanes.
Resting below street level, this home conjoins the rock platforms of the Hawkesbury River on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Our clients were nearing retirement and wanting to spend more time at their holiday home, which would eventually become their primary residence. We looked outdoors to the beauty of the natural surrounds; and spent time with client and architect to really identify how each space would be used. Good design takes time, and the design result is something truly unique.
The home reflects and nurtures the interests of its inhabitants, with spaces for entertainment, spaces for quiet contemplation, and a direct connection to nature.
The internal lift and staircase of sandstone, concrete, timber and carpet connects all levels, while the considered materials palette accentuates the peaceful sense of quiet and calm within the home.
